Postal workers across Austria took industrial action today in protest at cost savings due to bedecided tomorrow (December 11).
Some 80 post offices in cities and towns were closed for several hours as Austrian Postemployees stopped work to join the industrial action called by unions.
The unions are protesting at expected plans by the postal operator to make large-scale costsavings in 2009, and in particular to close a large number of post offices.
In response, Austrian Post CEO Anton Wais said strikes in the run-up to Christmas were “thewrong way” and would damage not only the company but also its customers.
The Austrian Post supervisory board will tomorrow decide on the company’s cost-cutting plansfor 2009.
