DHL Express cuts 49 jobs in Hong Kong

DHL Express will cut 49 jobs in Hong Kong under restructuring plans, including relocatingback-office customer service to nearby Guangzhou in mainland China.



The express operator said it has embarked upon an ‘organizational effectiveness program’ toprovide a solid base to meet the requirements of its future growth.
 
“We are looking at reengineering or migrating processes. It is regrettable, but there will bea small number of positions that will be eliminated. Impacted employees have been offered severaloptions including relocating within the DHL network, or to take on new roles,” DHL Express said ina statement.
 
The backline customer service will be relocated to Guangzhou, while core customer servicefunctions will remain in Hong Kong.  A total of 49 employees are impacted, some of whom havebeen offered relocation opportunities to Guangzhou. “For all individuals, we will provide them fairseverance packages, and also render assistance in helping them obtain alternative employment,” thecompany said.

Meanwhile, more than 250 DHL employees held warning strikes at two subsidiaries in Germany onNovember 18 ahead of pay talks on November 20. The Verdi union is seeking an 8% pay rise for 1,000DHL employees.
