DHL has extended its GOGREEN range of carbon-neutral services to Austria to meet customers’ demandfor a more environmentally-responsible shipping option and to compensate for the emissions
generated when transporting shipments across the globe. The aim of DHL’s global environmental programme GoGreen is to improve the company’s carbonefficiency by 30% by 2020. It has set strict targets in reducing emissions per package sent, tonstransported and square meters of real estate used by nearly one third. The programme is based onthe improved energy efficiency through fleet and process optimisation, green products and services, employee commitment and involving services partners and customers.
“With GoGreen we are helping our customers contribute to climate protection without bigefforts and according to transparent criteria,” said Dr. Martin Hermesch, country manager of DHLExpress Austria.
Through the exact calculation of the carbon emissions generated by transporting each specificshipment from the country of origin to destination, DHL GoGreen service allows customers to offsetthese emissions through external and internal carbon management projects. The calculation iseffected by means of the patented ‘ACCEPT Emission Calculation Tool’.
“We can provide our customers detailed information about every individual shipment in termsof the particular CO2 emissions released during transportation. For example, a 5 kg packagegenerates 30 kg of carbon dioxide that can be offset with GoGreen,” Dr. Hermesch explained.
By the end of the financial year, customers receive a certificate about the total volume ofthe CO2 emissions offset during one year. The whole process is verified by the independentcertification company SGS, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
DHL Express Austria has for years undertaken many measures towards environmental and climateprotection. For example, it has launched an effective environment management system used forcertifying among others all the 15 locations in Austria according to the environment managementnorm ISO 14001. In addition, the company has been continuously improving its fleet in terms of theCO2 efficiency by optimizing the planning of the routes and the network design. Furthermore, thefleet is being modernized converting 10% of the fleet to natural gas vehicles by 2010.
