UPS yesterday announced that it had restored package delivery services to most geographic areasaffected by Hurricane Gustav. FedEx, which implemented operational contingency plans before the
storm, has not yet announced when it will get back to normal operations.UPS said that it successfully executed its contingency plans and no facilities or deliveryvehicles suffered any substantial damage from the storm.
In a few areas, UPS has not resumed its service yet, most notably New Orleans where the citygovernment has yet to lift its mandatory evacuation order. The company is prepared to resumeservice immediately to and from New Orleans once it is allowed to send employees back to the city,even if generators are required to provide power. Other areas still awaiting service are locatedprimarily in Louisiana, including Houma and New Iberia.
FedEx announced several safety measures in advance of Hurricane Gustav’s projected landfallincluding the closure of the FedEx Express facilities in Harahan, New Orleans, Metairie and Kennerand LA until after the storm has passed. Customers’ shipments destined for these areas are beingheld outside of the projected path of the storm and will be delivered as soon as it is safe toresume operations, FedEx said.
In a customer message yesterday, FedEx said that the hurricane impact was causing delays anddisruptions in pickup and delivery services for customers, and it would provide further updatedinformation.
