DHL GoGreen

DHL Sweden announced it is investing in a new fleet of environmentally friendly company cars, aiming at the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 30%, in comparison to 2007 levels, by the

year 2020 at the latest.

DHL plans to invest an additional SEK 20,000 (€ 2,120) on each vehicle. With a total fleet ofcurrently 439 cars, including 193 clean cars, this gives an investment of SEK 8 million (€848,162). The investment is the start of various environmental projects as part of DHL’s globalenvironmental program GOGREEN.

According to DHL Sweden, all its companies will replace the entire company car fleet withenvironmentally friendly alternatives such as ethanol, biogas, natural gas, or electricity. For DHLemployees who have to choose company cars, there will only be environmentally friendly alternativeson offer. DHL says that within three years at the very latest, current non-environmentally friendlycompany cars should also have been replaced with alternatives that meet stricter environmentalrequirements.

Morten Marvad, Fleet & Equipment Manager for the three DHL companies in Sweden, said: “Our leasing program runs for a three-year period, which means that this is a completely realistictarget. But things may well move even quicker, as this is something we are prioritising.”

Marvad explained that in spite of the fact that trips do need a certain amount of planning,as the number of petrol stations offering alternative fuels is still relatively limited, theexperience of DHL staff who already use environmentally friendly company cars has been verypositive.

Earlier this year, DHL Express decided to replace all its diesel-powered courier vehicleswith environmentally friendly alternatives. The decision involved more than 200 courier vehiclesthat are mainly used for picking up and delivering packages from and to customers in built-upareas.
