UPS grows in Asia with Alcatel-Lucent Hong Kong deal

UPS is expanding operations in Asia with the opening of a dedicated logistics hub forAlcatel-Lucent in Hong Kong that will speed up time-to-market for the communications group in the

region.

UPS announced today it will be the Lead Logistics Provider in Asia for Alcatel-LucentEnterprise Solution Division (ESD), which has expanded its venture in Asia Pacific with the recentopening of its new 45,600 sq. ft. (4,180 sqm) distribution centre in Hong Kong.

UPS will perform various logistical activities like inbound receiving, storage services,inventory management, pick-and-pack operations, returns management and outbound transportationmanagement. The facility, being a radio frequency-driven operation, makes real time transactionsand guarantees 100 percent accuracy, and is expected to bring enhanced and quicker customer supportin Asia Pacific.

“As Asia Pacific is essential to our overall growth strategy, this continuing partnershipwith UPS in the region ensures us of improved customer service by bringing our communicationssolutions faster and better to our growing customer base in this part of the world,” said StanStopka, Vice President, Global Operations and Quality for Alcatel-Lucent ESD.

The activation of the new Hong Kong logistics centre, which is fully dedicated toAlcatel-Lucent ESD, slashes delivery response time by days and reduces direct operating expensesfor Alcatel-Lucent. In the past, products were shipped from Europe and United States to theircustomers in Asia, UPS noted in a statement.

“Alcatel-Lucent ESD and UPS have jointly developed an Asia Pacific logistics solution thatwill support existing Alcatel-Lucent’s customer base and new business growth initiatives. As aperennial partner in the Alcatel-Lucent supply chain, UPS is committed to our customer’s businessgoals and philosophies,” said Craig Foster, Vice President for Contract Logistics, UPS Asia PacificRegion.

“We will drive continuous improvement with UPS’s global supply chain experience, capabilitiesand systems driving efficiencies and improvements in support of Alcatel-Lucent ESD’s long termsuccess in APAC region. As an example, this Hong Kong Distribution Center enables them to havequicker turnaround times and meet the surging demand in one of the world’s fastest growing region,”Foster added.

In 1999, UPS was appointed by Alcatel-Lucent as contract logistics consultant and since thenthe relationship has led to various signed agreements like the XPO (Return Logistics with RepairVendor Management) Memorandum of Understanding on July 2003, the XPL (4PL Contract for theLogistics Distribution with one distribution center in France) Contract on August 2003 and theLOGOS (4PL contract for the logistics distribution with one distribution centre in France and oneregional distribution centre in Hong Kong) contract on April 2008.
