UPS said today it expects to deliver some 19 million items for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games forwhich it is the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Sponsor. About 2,000 staff are working
on-site, and up to 217 trucks and vans will be used for deliveries.The company has already delivered 10.6 million items in preparation for the Olympics. In thetwo weeks prior to the Games, which started last Friday, UPS handled 320,000 items per day and itanticipates delivering another four million items throughout the 16 days of the Summer Games.Shipments include all of the Games-related equipment and support materials that will be used at thecompetition venues, ranging from tennis balls and canoes to computers and scoreboards.
UPS is operating from the Olympic Logistics Centre (OLC), the central logistics anddistribution hub where the company is managing the warehousing, inventory control and delivery ofnearly everything going in and out of the competition venues, non-competition venues and otherindependent training locations. Comprised of four warehouses spanning 2 million square feet, theOLC is UPS’s largest single customer facility in Asia. UPS has also opened Express Stores at thepress and broadcasting centres and in the athletes and media villages for urgent shipments.
During the Games, UPS is responsible for all express delivery and transportation services foraccredited areas including the venues, the Olympic Green, the Athletes’ Village and the PressVillage. The range of services provided by UPS covers the shipment of competition equipment and themovement of time-sensitive film footage and photographic materials. UPS is also responsible for allreverse-logistics during the post-Games period and logistics for the Paralympic Games.
In addition, UPS has been running a major advertising campaign on nationwide TV, radio, printand online media in China and has held roadshows in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen tohighlight its role at the Olympics.
“Since we began preparing for the Games, UPS has processed more than 10,000 tons ofOlympics-related equipment, equivalent to approximately one and one-half times the weight of thesteel frame used in the Water Cube, the iconic structure where most of the indoor aquatic eventswill be conducted,” said Scott Davis, Chairman and CEO, UPS. “Throughout the Games, we are runningat full speed with about 2,000 people serving on the UPS Olympic operations team.”
