European airlines saw their cargo traffic grow just 1% in June and by a moderate 3.2% over thefirst half of 2008, according to figures from the Association of European Airlines (AEA). This
matches low figures for June recently released by IATA and airports body ACI.In June, freight traffic on the AEA’s member airlines grew 1% to 3.2 billion freight tonnekilometres (FTK), the standard industry measurement of cargo traffic excluding mail. Air cargotraffic within Europe dropped 7.8% to 70.4 million FTKs while long-haul traffic was up 1.2% at justover 3 billion FTKs.
Over the first six months of the year, total scheduled traffic was up 3.2% at 18.7 billionFTKs. European cargo traffic was down 4.4% at 431.6 million FTKs while long-haul traffic showed a3.3% rise to 17.7 billion FTKs.
The June figures cover air cargo, including air express shipments, carried on AEA’smembership of 33 passenger and cargo airlines. DHL and TNT recently joined the association witheffect from July 1, taking membership to 35 airlines.
