TNT wins award for first hybrid eco-truck in Australia

TNT Australia launches hybrid trucks

TNT Express Australia has won the “2008 Technology and Innovation Award” for its Hino hybrid truckat the annual Transport Awards in the country, the global automotive manufacturer Hino reported.



At the end of April this year, TNT introduced 10 Hino hybrid trucks in becoming the firstcourier and parcels delivery operator in Australia to start operating a fleet of diesel-electrichybrid as replacements for conventionally powered vehicles. Therefore, it was recognized foractively pursuing its eco-friendly policy.

The new trucks emit 14% less CO2 and 50% less nitrous oxides than a conventional diesel truckof equivalent size. TNT expects to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,600 kg ofCO2 a year per vehicle.

Hino has committed itself to actively promote hybrid as a viable transport resource,especially in urban and suburban deliveries. The company has spent more than two years promotingthe concept in Australia and is now gearing up for a roll-out of new models.

“The Technology and Innovation Award is a gratifying recognition of our stance on theenvironment,” Hino Australia Chief Operating Officer Steve Lotter said. “In the future, hybrid willmake a considerable contribution to what is becoming a carbon economy. Hino regards its associationwith progressive companies like TNT Express as a partnership in seeking joint solutions to climatechange”, he added.
