GLS Austria opened its 1,650 sqm facility in Zirl in Tyrol after 3 months of construction, replacing its smaller facility at nearly Inzing.
Due to the growing demand for parcel services the capacity reserves of the old facility wereexhausted, the company said. The new GLS depot with 50 staff currently handles 10,000 parcels perday and has the capacity to handle up to 5,000 parcels per hour or 15,000 parcels per day. Allemployees from the old depot have moved to the new facility which is located on a 12,000 sqm plotof land and has 57 docks for vehicles.
Next to an ultra-modern security system providing constant video surveillance, GLS is alsocontributing to sustainability by installing an environmentally sound heat pump at the new buildingtargeting a reduction of CO2 emissions over the next years.
“Our aim is to reduce the CO2 emissions per parcel by 20% within the next five years,” KlausSchädle, GLS Managing Director South Europe said. “We expect an increase of shipment volumes by 12%during the next year. And we are well prepared for handling the growing volumes thanks to themodern equipment and enhanced capacities.”
