FedEx Express to launch hybrid-electric vans in Europe

FedEx is testing 10 hybrid-electric vehicles in Turin and Milan, Italy, helping develop newcost-effective green technologies that provide a real alternative for businesses and consumers,

The vans, manufactured by Iveco in Turin, are trialled close to the manufacturer’s site onroutes between Milan and Turin, Italy, but mostly in the company’s operation in France. The use ofhybrid-electric vehicles will cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 30% through a numberof systems such as Stop & Start and regenerative braking, Iveco said.

“We are committed to the development of this technology and the next step is to make itaffordable for our customers”, said Paolo Monferino, Iveco’s CEO in Italy. “In order to meetcustomer demand, Iveco will introduce hybrid power train technology in our vehicle productionfacilities by the end of 2009″, he added.

At the end of last year, FedEx announced its plans to introduce hybrid-electric vehicles toits European fleet, bringing the total number in service at FedEx to more than 100 vehiclesworldwide including North America, Asia and now Europe.
