Aramex has introduced four hybrid cars to its ground fleet under a strategy to reduce its CO2emissions per shipment by 50% before 2009. It is the first logistics company to use hybrid vehicles
in the Middle East.Using pioneering technology, the environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicles operate on twoengines designed to minimise fuel consumption, while reducing the harmful emission of carbondioxide. Running on an electric motor and switching to fuel based on the load of the engine, thehybrid cars are estimated to reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions by 50%.
The move is part of Aramex’s environmental strategy outlined in its annual CorporateSustainability Report (CSR), to help reduce its carbon footprint across the region as it aims tobecome the industry’s first carbon neutral provider.
Aramex Chief Sustainability Officer Raji Hattar said: “Preserving our environment is part ofAramex’s long term commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). By proactively identifyingand investing in eco-friendly business practices such as the use of hybrid vehicles, we are helpingbuild a truly sustainable business model.”
In-line with the company’s drive to reduce its impact on the environment, Aramex has switchedthe majority of its fleet to unleaded fuel and is now looking for solutions to make its entirefleet environmentally-friendly.
Aramex added in a statement that the use of hybrid vehicles not only helps protect theenvironment, but also provides a cost effective solution to soaring fuel costs.
In recognition of its leadership position in the area of social and environmentalsustainability in the Middle East, Aramex won the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) award atthe annual Supply Chain and Transport Awards (SCATA) in the beginning of June. The company was alsothe first in the region to issue a sustainability report.
