The US Postal Service (USPS) is making efforts to help improve environmental awareness by offeringgreener choices and upgrading its own postal buildings. It has launched a new “green” website

section to promote its activities.

USPS said that it empowers consumers to go green through a comprehensive approach to mail andparcel production, delivery and recycling that enhances sustainability. Moreover, it is upgradingpostal buildings to reduce energy use aiming at the reduction of energy consumption by 30 percentby 2015.

“Our mission is to deliver now — and for future generations,” said Sam Pulcrano, vicepresident, sustainability. “With every step we take, we are committed to leaving a green footprintacross the American landscape.”

The new green web pages (usps.com/green) help USPS’ customers to learn how to be greenerconsumers and direct them to product, recycling, Postal Service environmental innovation, directmail and ideas for greening mail, including links to local recycling centres, reusing boxes andpackages for shipping and a way to calculate carbon footprint savings by conducting Postal Servicebusiness online.

Customers also can order packing and shipping materials through the green site. A halfbillion Priority Mail and Express Mail packages and envelopes now meet higher environmentalstandards and more than 15,000 metric tons of carbon equivalent emissions are eliminated everyyear.

The US Postal Service said it has received 39 White House Closing the Circle (CTC) Awards foroutstanding environmental stewardship. The awards are presented annually by the Office of theFederal Environmental Executive for outstanding achievements of Federal employees and theirfacilities for efforts that make a significant positive impact on environmental stewardship.
