GLS signs up Gati as partner in India

European parcels operator GLS yesterday signed a partnership agreement with Indian logisticsoperator Gati to provide delivery across India and throughout Europe of their respective export

parcels. The cooperation will start on April 1.

“Through our new partner, Gati, our customers are linked to one of the leading expressdistribution and supply chain solutions companies in India,” said GLS CEO Rico Back. “This means weare improving their access to a promising market.”

Saadi Al-Soudani, Managing Director International at GLS, added: “Among the biggestadvantages of our new partner is its excellent information technology. Shipment tracking viaInternet as well as on demand delivery notification per SMS or email are part of Gati’s standardservices.”

Under their partnership, GLS export parcels to India will be flown to the centraldistribution centre in Delhi to be further transported by Gati to their respective destination via19 express distribution centres. Imports from India will be flown to Frankfurt and distributed fromthere and the GLS central hub at Neuenstein via the GLS European network.

GLS, with revenues of EUR 1.6 billion in 2006/07, has a European network of 32 centraltranshipment points, 655 depots and 12,000 employees. Some 17,800 vehicles are on route moving 311million parcels annually for 220,000 customers.

Gati, with over 3,500 employees and 2,000 business associates, covers 594 out of 604districts in India. As well as road-based distribution of parcels and freight, Gati offers domesticair express services in cooperation with Air India and international transportation.
