UPS donates over $400,000 to relief aid, social projects

UPS has announced a number of donations totalling more than $400,000 for humanitarian aid andsocial projects over the last few weeks. 



The UPS Foundation has given a $100,000 grant to Africare to fund improvements at Gaga Camp,a refugee camp in eastern Chad that is home to about 17,000 refugees who have fled violence in theSudanese province of Darfur. The funding will be used to support crop-growing at the camp.

“The UPS Foundation has given more than a grant,” said Africare President Julius E. Coles.“It has provided resources to ensure that the mothers, fathers and children forced out of Darfurand into Gaga Refugee Camp will have good nutrition, and the tools to sustain that nutrition forthe time they remain at the camp.”

Meanwhile, the Baltimore, USA-based National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, runby the blind for the blind, will receive a $100,000 grant from the UPS Foundation for itsTransition to Independence Project, which provides outreach services to transition-age youth whoare blind or have low vision.

In addition, The UPS Foundation awarded the American Indian College Fund $128,000 forscholarships benefiting American Indian students. The grant will support qualified American Indianstudents by providing financial resources to encourage them to complete a college degree. UPSdoubled its grant support from the previous year.

Moreover, Target Hunger, a non-profit agency serving the needs of the hungry in Houston’sFifth Ward, was recently awarded a $100,000 grant from the UPS Foundation to help feed some 500households and undertake other activities.
