DHL opens new terminal at Ljubljana Airport

DHL Express Slovenia has opened a new operations terminal at Ljubljana Airport that will be used asa regional hub.



The new facility, including more than 2000 sqm of handling and storage space, will be thejoint location for the activities of DHL’s two units, Express and Freight, in Slovenia. Theseinclude handling, sorting and customs clearance of express shipments and groupage road freight.

The DHL terminal is the first facility in the business-logistics zone known as Airport Citythat Aerodrom Ljubljana is planning at the airport.

With the Airport City, Aerodrom Ljubljana plans to develop Slovenia’s main airport into atransport terminal that will function as a logistics, business and commercial zone withinter-connecting road, rail and air routes. The facility will also meet warehousing and otherlogistics needs.

The DHL facility was built by the partner construction companies within the GH Holding groupand Aerodrom Ljubljana. Aerodrom Ljubljana provided the site and infrastructure worth EUR 0.6million euros. Intering Holding which is part of SGP Pomgrad, one of the partners within the GHHolding group, invested EUR 2.5 million.

According to a report from the Slovenia news agency STA, DHL Slovenia managing director BojanBrank said that DHL Express Slovenia commanded nearly 60% of the Slovenian express market and thatit expects the market to continue growing at a healthy pace.

In order to cater for the growing demand, the company intends to begin using a Boeing 757cargo plane to service the terminal in Ljubljana, significantly increasing capacity.

DHL hopes the terminal will become its hub not only for Slovenia but also for the Austrianregion of Carinthia, parts of Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Croatia.
