DHL Global Mail opens domestic terminal in Singapore

DHL Global Mail yesterday opened a new domestic terminal in Singapore close to Changi Airport whichis the operator’s largest of its kind in the Asia Pacific region. The facility will enable DHL to

target the newly-liberalised mail market in Singapore.

“This is a significant milestone for us. We are confident that DHL Global Mail is now evenbetter positioned to capitalize on the growth of the Singapore’s domestic mail market in the lightof the imminent liberalization,” said Michael Culme-Seymour, CEO, DHL Global Mail Asia Pacific. “The strategic location of Singapore will also enable us to tap the thriving intra-Asia cross bordermail business in the region.”

The new terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for printing and fulfillment,and has the capacity to handle over five million pieces of mail per month, a fourfold increase fromits previous operating facility, DHL Asia Pacific said in a statement.

The new facility is designed to help to strengthen DHL Global Mail’s leadership position inSingapore’s Direct Marketing industry. The new terminal also complements DHL Global Mail’soperations at the existing terminal at the Airport Hub, which caters to the South East Asia region.

Customers will have access to an expanded portfolio of value-added services, includingdatabase management, variable printing, lettershopping and light warehousing. In addition, thecustomers can also look forward to faster turnaround times for their mail delivery, as well asenjoy cost savings from the introduction of a new generation of technology at the terminal.

The new terminal occupies a total area of nearly 18,000 square feet, or about the size of 6tennis courts, and is close to three times larger than the existing terminal. It offers acomprehensive suite of product offerings covering Direct Mail, Publication, Parcel, Solution andBusiness Mail.

Global Mail plans to implement Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology at the newTerminal as part of DHL Global Mail’s world-wide initiative to track transit time between mailterminals. The RFID system will be utilized on selected international mail pieces between mail hubsand between mail hubs and postal operators to regulate and enforce stringent quality control acrossthe mail logistics chain to ensure mail pieces are delivered within the stipulated time frame tothe recipients.

The RFID technology has already been installed in the international mail terminals inAustralia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
