DHL Express enhances European infrastructure and network

DHL

DHL Express has undertaken a number of measures in September to enhance its ground infrastructureand network in Europe.

In Sweden, DHL today opened a new express terminal at Törsjö, in Örebro, located in southernSweden between Stockholm and Gothenburg. The 7,600 sqm terminal has some 60 gates and lies on a28,000 sqm piece of land. Shipments will be sorted via a computer-generated distribution model thatwill reduce the number of unnecessary journeys and reduce environmental impact.

“Örebro is a central demographic point for haulage in Scandinavia because we can reach thegreatest number of people within the smallest possible radius. This imposes considerable demands onthe business and I am happy to announce that with the new terminal at Törsjö we can offer bothexisting and potential customers a high level of delivery accuracy”, says Anders Ekwall, Directorof Operations at the DHL Express installation in Örebro.

Further north, DHL Express launched a new flight between the Estonian capital of Tallinn andHelsinki earlier this month. The service is being operated by a BAe turboprop aircraft with 8.5tonnes capacity. This followed the opening of a new EUR 5.1 million logistics centre, including a3,000 sqm handling terminal, on the eastern side of Tallinn in August.

In Central Europe, DHL Express relocated some forwarding activities from Vienna InternationalAirport to nearby Bratislava Airport in mid-September, and will use the Slovakian capital as atrucking hub for surrounding countries. Shipments from Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, and parts ofRomania, Austria and the Czech Republic are now transported to Bratislava for sorting and onwarddistribution to the final destinations.

DHL has also upgraded flight operations in Eastern Europe by introducing B757-200 freighterflights to Bulgaria and Romania in recent months. The aircraft offers 30 tonnes capacity which issignificantly more than the previously-used planes. DHL says it is growing at high double-digitrates in both countries.
