GLS is expanding its parcel network to Romania with effect from 1 August with the operational startof a new subsidiary. The investment volume amounts to EUR 5 million.
Headquartered in Sibiu, GLS Romania will be offering nationwide deliveries with transit timesof 24 hours. Distribution across the country will be ensured by the hub in Sibiu as well as tendepots in Sibiu, Brasov, Pitesti, Bucharest, Targu Mures, Cluj Napoca, Baia Mare, Oradea, Timisoaraand Deva.
The start-up company will be headed by Gabor Szemkeo, Managing Director GLS Europe East. Thenumber of staff or vehicles was not disclosed.
GLS Romania is linked to GLS’ European network via regular line haul transports to theAustrian hub in Ansfelden and the Hungarian hub in Budapest. GLS will offer 72-hour transit timesfor Romanian import parcels.

GLS has already established start-up companies in new EU member states in Central and EasternEurope such as Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic in recent years.
“We want to be present for our customers in eastern European EU markets to meet the increasein demand,” said GLS chief executive Rico Back. “Establishing our own companies has proven to be asuccessful strategy. We are able to achieve GLS’ high quality objectives in the first few weeks ofoperations and normally the break-even point in the second business year.”
