The Communication Workers’ Union has called a further two weeks of strikes at Royal Mail, startingon Wednesday 25 July.
Each worker will walk out for two 24-hour strikes over the fortnight, ensuring continuousdisruption during the period, the union said.
The escalation of the strike was called, it said, since Royal Mail was “unwilling to engagein any meaningful negotiations.”
“We have contacted Royal Mail leaders on copious occasions, consistently asking fornegotiations to find a resolution to the dispute. Royal Mail management continue to ignore theunion and its workforce. This is absolutely unacceptable”, said Dave Ward, CWU Deputy GeneralSecretary.
In addition to strike action, the CWU said it was stepping up its campaign to make pressuregroups and the public aware that postal workers are taking this action “in an attempt to defend andprotect postal services”.
Reacting to the news, Royal Mail said it was hugely disappointed that the CWU had called formore action.
“Strike action does not change Royal Mail’s absolute need to modernise, as all our majorrivals have already done, if we are to be able to compete successfully in an increasinglychallenging marketplace and continue to provide great customer service into the future,” the grouprepeated in a statement.
