DHL opens $7.8 million US facility, launches yet another US-Mexico service

DHL has opened a new US regional sorting hub at Bloomington in Minnesota to serve its air andground network in the Midwest region.



The $7.8 million (EUR 5.66 million) facility relocates DHL in Minnesota to an 80,000 sq footspace from one half the area and is closer to Minneapolis’ St Paul International Airport.

“DHL is continually looking for ways to improve and augment service for customers throughstrategic investments in our US operations,” said John Cameron, DHL’s executive vice-president ofoperations. “The new regional sort centre positions the company well for future growth within itsMidwest footprint.”

Meanwhile, the Deutsche Post subsidiary has continued its southern US expansion by launchinga new US-Mexico cross-border service from South Texas.

The Harlingen service centre is capable of handling triple the volume of its previouscapacity as well as heavier palletized freight and non-conveyable material to meet the growingneeds of customers shipping into and out of the Rio Grande Valley and northern Mexico regions. 

The Harlingen service upgrade comes less than a month after DHL announced the opening of itsHermosillo gateway to meet the increasing demand from customers shipping across the U.S.-Mexicoborder from Northwest Mexico.

The investments are part of DHL’s North America Trade Lane initiative, which was launched inNovember 2006 to increase the speed and efficiency of cross-border shipments.
