DHL Express yesterday inaugurated its $41 million (EUR 30.6 million) new expanded facility atKansai International Airport in Japan, designed to meet forecast strong business growth in the
region, especially imports from China, the company said.The 10,100 sqm gateway is the largest centre operated by an international express company atthe airport, says DHL, part of EUR 70 million it is investing in Japan over the next few years.
“The expansion of the DHL Kansai International Airport Gateway underlines the strong growththat DHL is experiencing in Japan and Asia Pacific,” said Scott Price, CEO of DHL Express AsiaPacific, opening the terminal.
“The expanded gateway complements our other Japan gateways in Chubu and Narita. Together, thethree Gateways seamlessly connect our customers in Japan to our extensive network in Asia Pacificand beyond, ensuring they continue to enjoy DHL’s best-in-class product and service offerings.”
The expanded facility – five times bigger than the previous facility – will accommodate theincreases in cargo volume and weight handled by DHL in Kansai.
Now relocated next to the airport runway, the new facility will also further enhanceefficiency and speed in cargo processing, providing customers with better time-to-marketcapabilities, the Deutsche Post subsidiary said.
Air Hong Kong, DHL’s joint venture with Cathay Pacific, currently operates a ten-time weeklydedicated service at the Kansai International Airport to and from DHL’s Central Asia Hub in HongKong. DHL also utilizes close to 100 commercial flights in Japan every day.
