UPS is calling the base its Mediterranean hub and the company’s managing director in France,Jean-François Condamine, told Les Echos business newspaper that it would use Marseille to connectthe Mediterranean basin to the world from the start of 2008.

And he said the project was partly in response to strong customer demand in southern Frenchcities and towns such as Perpignan and Menton.

Marseille is the only airport with cargo routes to countries such as Algeria, Libya andMauritania.

Eighty per cent of the airport’s air freight – over 32,000 tonnes – was express last year, according to Lloyds. Chronopost, DHL, FedEx and TNT already use the airport.
