Japanese airlines in domestic cargo cooperation

Galaxy Airlines

Japan Airlines and Galaxy Airlines, the Sagawa Express cargo airline, are stepping up theirexisting cooperation in the Japanese domestic freight market.



From April 3, the two carriers will extend their code-sharing agreement to cover GalaxyAirlines’ new flights between Tokyo, Osaka and the island of Sapporo. These will be operated withthe airline’s second Airbus A300-600R freighter. Japan Airlines (JAL) will buy part of the 47-tonnefreight capacity on the flights.

Galaxy Airlines launched services last October from Tokyo to Kitakyushu and to Okinawa usingan Airbus A300-600R freighter. JAL, which aims to grow its domestic market share, sealed acode-share deal for these flights last November.

SG Holdings, the parent company of Sagawa Express, one of the leading Japanese express andparcels operators, founded Galaxy Airlines as an in-house airline to transport its shipments. JALhas a 10% share in the carrier and provides operational support.
