TNT Express yesterday laid the foundation stone for a new EUR 19 million branch in Hamburg thatwill be its biggest location in Germany on going into service at the end of August 2007.
The new facility at Hamburg-Allermöhe, about 15km south-east of the city centre, lies on a26,000 sqm plot of land close to the junction of the A1 and A25 motorways. Office space of 2,970sqm will be available for the 202 depot staff. The sorting area covers 5,184 sqm, and there aredocking facilities for up to 99 trucks and vans at the same time. About 750,000 shipments a yearwill be handled there.
TNT Express said the new facility, in which it is investing some EUR 19 million, would be arole model for other new facilities. “We are doing everything possible for optimal security of ourcustomers’ freight,” said Thomas Kraus, CEO of TNT Express Germany. Key customers in Hamburginclude Sharp Electronics Europe und Lufthansa Technik Logistik.
Depot manager Bernd Jacobsen said that the enlarged facilities were necessary following rapidgrowth for TNT Express in the Hamburg area in recent years. The U-form of the new building meantthat it could easily be lengthened or the interior area converted into handling space.
