DHL completes automation of US West Coast hub

DHL announced this week that it had completed the automation of its $70 million air and ground hubat Riverside on the US West Coast.



The Deutsche Post subsidiary said the 260,000-sqft Californian hub’s new auto sort systemwould increase letter handling capability by 67% and parcel throughput by 28%.

“Our entire operations network stands to benefit from the increases in overall capacity as aresult of the auto sort system.” John Cameron, DHL’s executive vice-president of operations.

The automation of Riverside, which serves the west and south-west of the country, is part ofa $160 million hub investment programme, and a wider $1.2 billion network expansion by DHL in theUSA that began three years ago.

State-of-the-art equipment at the Riverside centre includes shoe-sort and tilt-tray systems,loaders, unloaders, singulators, dimensional and image scanners, scan tunnels and video coding, thecompany said. The facility can now process more than 50,000 pieces an hour, 125,000 per day.
