La Poste is to invest EUR 200 million in Rhône-Alpes, south-eastern France, over the next threeyears to modernise mail sorting in the region.
Rhône-Alpes, whose main cities are Lyon and Grenoble, will have five mail hubs and 44 sortingcentres, together capable of handling more than 9 million items per day through “some of the mostmodern machines in the world”, according to Yves Xemard, executive director (mail) for La Poste’scentre-east division.
At a press conference in Lyon, Xemard outlined the modernisation, which will see EUR 82million immediately put to work in Isère, where a 13,000 sqm hub is to be built at the currentGrenoble-Sassenage centre, and Savoie, where a business mail platform is being constructed on theRumilly industrial estate.
The whole project should be complete by 2010, said Xemard, by when Rhône-Alpes, the secondmost important economic region in France, “will benefit from a quality of service of the highestEuropean standards.”
