DHL Express has announced it is to build a new 32,000 sqm distribution hub north of Lisbon thatwill employ over 300 workers.
The centre, to be built in the developing Alta de Lisboa district, will receive 70 expresstrucks and around 200 mail and parcel vans per day.
“It will cover all the metropolitan area of Lisbon and have a handling capacity of 5,000pieces per hour, which represents about 11 billion pieces per year,” DHL Express Portugal managingdirector Américo Fernandes said in a statement.
The Portuguese courier and express market has grown 8% a year since 2003 and is forecast todo so again this year.
Around 80 of the 200 express companies operating in Portugal are based in the Lisbon andTagus Valley area. Over half of deliveries are made by foreign carriers.
