FedEx Express has commissioned four hybrid electric trucks in Denver, bringing its US-wide fleet ofthe promising low-emission vehicles to 93.
Hybrid trucks cut pollution by 90% compared to conventional trucks, says FedEx, a champion ofthe technology since 2000.
The FedEx hybrid lorry, developed with Environmental Defense and Eaton Corp., decreases sootby 96%, smog-causing emissions by 65% and travels 57% farther on a gallon of fuel, reducing fuelcosts by over a third, the carrier said. Yet FedEx says it operates and performs like one of thecompany’s conventional medium-duty vehicles.
“The introduction of these hybrid vehicles in Denver is another milestone in our ongoingcommitment to environmental stewardship,” said John Formisano, FedEx Express vice-president, globalvehicles.
FedEx, which claims to be the first company to begin converting its medium-duty truck fleetto commercial-use hybrids, has another 89 such vehicles operating in US cities, including New York,Tampa, Sacramento and Washington.
