GLS has opened a new EUR 1.55 million depot at Cottbus in Saxony in eastern Germany to increase itssorting capacity in the region.
The parcels company said that 70 staff would work at the new location which has capacity tohandle up to 12,000 parcels a day. Initially, about 7,000 parcels will be handled at the depotwhich replaces a smaller site.
The 1,155 sqm depot, with 34 docking doors, lies on a 14,100 sqm plot of land and is locatedclose to the A15 motorway. It will serve a catchment area from Eisenhüttenstadt to Hoyerswerda.
GLS Germany managing director Klaus Conrad said the larger depot would enable the company tocope with rising volumes. “In 2006, the shipment volume in depot 14 (Cottbus) grew by 10%. Highquality and reliable parcel logistics is appreciated by customers,” he commented. “We expect risingvolumes in the future, too. That is why we have strengthened our network.”
