Parcelforce Worldwide, the Royal Mail subsidiary, has announced a new schemewhere, at the customer’s request, it makes donations to environmental projects to offset greenhouse
gases generated during the transport of packages. In this way, the scheme offers customers the option to deliver their parcel “carbon-free”.
Clients booking online can now choose to donate five British pence perdomestic parcel and 10 pence per international parcel when ordering via Parcelforce’s web site.
Having calculated the average amount of carbon emitted for each parcel,Parcelforce Worldwide says it will match all donations and, through its association with TheWoodland Trust, invest it in an approved programme to offset greenhouse gases generated during theparcel’s journey.
Giving customers the option to send their parcel carbon-free was part of awider approach by Parcelforce Worldwide to carbon management, said managing director VanessaLeeson.
“Our business uses renewable energy in our buildings, bio-diesel in ourvehicle fleet and pro-actively seeks to increase energy efficiency where practical,” sheexplained.
“While we’d never force carbon offset onto our customers, many of them aretelling us that they will choose the commitment.”
