UPS makes top appointments

David Abney

United Parcel Service has made UPS International president David Abney its chief operating officerfollowing the retirement of John Beystehner. He will also assume the role of president of UPS

Airlines.

Abney, 51, will now be responsible for international operations, US package operations,global transportation, labour and all freight activities, said UPS in a statement. He has served aspresident of UPS International since 2002.

Alan Gershenhorn, 48, previously head of supply chain operations in Europe, Asia, the MiddleEast and Africa, is to replace Abney as UPS International president.

Both men began with UPS as part-time loaders in the 1970s, before progressing through themanagement ranks. With his promotion, Gershenhorn joins UPS’s management committee, comprised ofthe corporation’s 12 most senior executives, which oversees day-to-day operations.

The carrier is this year celebrating its centenary.
