GLS has opened a new EUR 2.2 million depot at Fürnitz in southern Austria to operate as a sortingand distribution centre for the surrounding region. Fürnitz near Villach lies at a motorway
junction with connections to Austria, Italy and Slovenia.The new depot, replacing a smaller building, was opened on January 2 after a constructionperiod of only three months, the Royal Mail subsidiary said in a statement. Currently handling some9,500 parcels a day, it has capacity for up to 12,000 parcels daily at peak times.
The sorting centre covers an area of 1,235 sqm, has a modern twin-belt sorting system and 41loading docks for trucks and vans. It is also fitted with video surveillance technology.
Klaus Schädle, GLS European Area Manager Germany South, Austria & Portugal, said: “Withthe new facility in Fürnitz we have ensured that Carinthia and Eastern Tyrol can be optimally andcomprehensively covered in the future.” GLS has 20% growth for its parcels volumes in the region,he noted.
