UPS Europe announced today it will expand its express services to and fromBulgaria and Romania when the two countries join the European Union on January 1, 2007.

UPS said that it will simultaneously expand its services to and from bothcountries, creating a uniform portfolio of shipping options across the soon-to-be 27 EU memberstates. By introducing three new shipping options and other services to its product portfolio inthe two new accession countries, UPS gives customers shipping to and from Bulgaria and Romaniagreater flexibility to balance speed with cost.

The elimination of trade barriers between the two accession countries and therest of the EU is a significant result of the enlargement. Customs delays will become a thing ofthe past and shipments to and from the countries will move with greater ease throughout the EU. Theaccession also allows for standardised shipping procedures, enabling import and export shipments tobe processed efficiently without the need for time-consuming documentation.

All of this gives UPS the ability to offer its customers in Romania andBulgaria an additional express shipping service, UPS Express Plus, which offers money-backguaranteed delivery by 9.00 a.m. the next business day to the rest of the world. In addition, thecompany offers UPS Standard and UPS Expedited, reliable non-express services with day-definitedelivery.

“When the EU last expanded to include ten new member states in May 2004, UPSshowed its commitment to its customers by then expanding the portfolio of services to and fromthose countries”, said Wolfgang Flick, president, UPS Europe. “The accession of Bulgaria andRomania brings further opportunities for growth in what is already the world’s largest singlemarket.”

“Many of the current EU countries are already trading heavily withBulgaria and Romania. In fact, France, Germany and Italy account for approximately 30% of totalimports for the two accession countries”, he added.
