Postal leaders from more than 130 countries converge on Dubai next week for the 2006 UniversalPostal Union strategy conference at a time of widespread transformation in the sector.
The meeting is attracting more than 600 participants, including 40 government ministers,heads of United Nations agencies and international organisations, as well as private sectorrepresentatives.
Globalisation, population movements, new technology and the role of the postal sector in theinformation society, competition, customer requirements and postal reform will be the main themesof the three-day conference, which begins on Tuesday 14 November and ends on Thursday 16 November.
Conclusions from the conference are likely to shape the world postal strategy to be adoptedat the four-yearly 2008 Universal Postal Congress in Nairobi.
“The strategy conference will be the cornerstone of the Nairobi world postal strategy,” saidEdouard Dayan, UPU director general. “This international gathering, held midway between twocongresses, will enable us to bring together all sector stakeholders, including governments andinternational organisations, especially those belonging to the United Nations, to discuss in anopen environment the questions that will shape the next World Postal Strategy.”
The conference will take place against a backdrop of continuous upheaval in thecommunications sector, says UPU, and will bring together the sector’s decision-makers to analysethe changing environment and explore ways of building a dynamic global infrastructure able tosatisfy customer demand.
Distinguished participants include WTO director general Pascal Lamy, International StandardsOrganisation secretary general Alan Bryden, the UN’s Geneva office director general SergeiOrdzhonikidze and His Excellency Sultan Saeed Al Mansouri, chair of Emirates Post and UAEgovernment sector development minister.
