The new €1.4 million Valencia airport hub UPS had planned to have up and running this month willnot come into operation until March, Spanish trade magazine Transmarket has reported.
Contractors Clasa (Centros Logisticos Aeroportuarios), a subsidiary of Spanish nationalairports authority Aena, said it would now not be able to hand over the keys to the 8,000 sqmcentre until January. UPS would need a further two months to locate there.
The Valencia hub is the start of considerable UPS expansion in Spain, with a 20,000 sqm plotreserved for a new distribution centre at Madrid’s growing Barajas airport. Negotiations over landare also going on at Barcelona’s El Prat airport, and UPS could relocate there from – or expand onits current facilities at – L’Hospitalet de Llobregat in 2008, the magazine said.
UPS predicts 15% growth in Spain this year on revenues of €155 million last year. As well asBarcelona, the American carrier also currently has international cargo facilities at Coslada,Madrid, and Sevilla (for electronics).
The group is also equipping drivers in Spain with Diad IV, a new generation of handheld, wireless GPS scanners.
