UPS is aiming for major growth in Japan over the next few years by doubling its network andtripling its workforce. The US company currently focuses on international services to and from
Asia’s dominant express and parcels market.UPS Japan said in a statement that it would increase its current network from 14 centres to27, and would increase its sales staff, drivers, and vehicles as the company approached itscentennial anniversary in 2007. UPS chief executive Mike Eskew was cited by Japanese newsagency Jiji as saying that the company wanted to triple Japanese sales, workforce and deliveryfleet size by 2007.
UPS entered the Japanese market in 1987 and now provides services directly in 58 areas. Inoverall terms, Japanese companies continue to dominate the domestic market while DHL is seen as theinternational market leader.
