Australia Post names new chairman

An ex-TNT senior executive has been appointed as the new chairman of Australia Post to support thecompany’s planned international expansion. David Mortimer, who has been deputy chairman since 2001,

has been appointed to the post for the next three years. He replaces Linda Nicholls who announcedher retirement earlier this year.

David Mortimer is a former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TNT Asia PacificRegion. In November 1996, he was appointed by the Federal Government to conduct a review ofbusiness programs which resulted in the ‘Mortimer Report’.

Commenting on his appointment, Mortimer said: “Australia Post has a talented board, anoutstanding chief executive in Graeme John and a first class executive team.  I look forwardto working with them over the next three years.
 
“Australia Post, like all businesses in today’s complex global market place faces someinteresting challenges.  I am confident that we have the strategies in place to ensure ourbusiness develops and grows strongly in the years ahead. My background as former chief executive ofglobal transport company TNT will also assist Australia Post’s expansion plans to take a leadingposition, with other postal organisations around the world, in the now globalised supply chain andlogistics market.”

The Australian Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, SenatorHelen Coonan, and the Minister for Finance and Administration, Senator Nick Minchin, welcomed theappointment. “Mr Mortimer has made a significant contribution to the Board of Australia Post sincehe was appointed to the position of Deputy Chair in 2001,” Senator Coonan said. “Mr Mortimer hashad a distinguished career in banking, finance and the transport industries, both in Australia andthe United States,” Senator Minchin said. “Mr Mortimer’s leadership and business acumen will be ofgreat benefit and I am sure he will make a valuable contribution to Australia Post.”
 
Mark Birrell has also been reappointed to the Australia Post Board for a period of threeyears.
