FedEx Express is set to grow its China business with more flights to the USA next year as itcontinues to expand its network in the country.
The US express operator has been granted permission by the US Department of Transport tooperate four more weekly flights between the USA and China with effect from March 2007. This willgive the company a total of 30 weekly flights between the two countries, the Associated Pressreported. FedEx currently has 26 weekly flights operated with MD11s and A310s to Beijing, Shanghaiand Shenzhen.
In comparison, UPS has 18 weekly US-China flights, split between Shanghai (12) and Guangzhou(6). DHL, which does not operate any own flights between the two countries, has sub-contracteddedicated freighter flights from its Hong Kong super-hub to the USA.
Meanwhile, FedEx opened a 1,200 sqm branch office and ultra-modern handling facility in thenortheastern Chinese city of Dalian earlier this month. This follows the opening of a new branch inQingdao in the northern province of Shandong in July.
FedEx is due to double the size of its China operation during the current financial year withcompletion of the $400 million acquisition of its Chinese international express joint ventureFedEx-DTW and the DTW Group’s separate domestic express business.
