The leading international air express operators are again increasing their fuel surcharges forSeptember but with regional differences. US surcharges are going up across the board, most Asian
surcharges are rising but European surcharges are more stable.In the USA, FedEx Express will increase its current 16% surcharge to 17% for September 4 toOctober 1. UPS will also hike its air and international surcharge from 16% to 17% with effect fromSeptember 4. DHL Express USA will increase its air express and international surcharge from thepresent 18% to 19% for the September 3-30 period. TNT Express will hike its Americas fuel surchargefrom 18% to 19% for the September 4 to October 1 period.
In Europe, TNT Express will increase its surcharge for “European-invoicing countries”(excluding the UK and Ireland) from 14% to 15% for the September 4 to October 1 period. Its UK fuelsurcharge during August was 3.5% for domestic and international economy services, and 7% forinternational global express services.
DHL Express will charge an unchanged 13% fuel surcharge for international express shipmentsin September in a number of European countries including Germany, Britain, France and Italy. UPS isalso keeping its fuel surcharge stable at 13% during September for various countries includingGermany, Britain, France and Italy. Similarly, FedEx Express will hold its fuel surcharge forcustomers in Europe, Middle East, India and Africa unchanged at 13% during September.
In Asia Pacific, DHL Express will hike its regional fuel surcharge to 14.5% in September fromthe current 14%. FedEx Express will increase its regional surcharge to 15.5% from 15%, while UPSwill hike its Asia surcharge to 16% from 15%. TNT Express will raise its “Rest of the World”surcharge (excluding Europe and the Americas) from 13.5% to 14% for the September 4 to October 1period.
The four worldwide integrators – FedEx, UPS, DHL and TNT Express –base their surcharges onindividual publicly-communicated fuel price indexes that are based on international jet fuel pricespublished by various international authorities or organisations.
