UPS may need a new slogan: “What can green do for you …?” The shipping company, known for itsbrown-coloured trucks and its “What can brown do for you?” campaign, will soon make house calls in
the world’s first hydraulic hybrid truck. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, which says it has patented theenvironmentally-friendly vehicle technology, unveiled the truck on Wednesday at the AmericanAirlines Center in Dallas. UPS will test the 21st-century vehicle during real-world deliveriesbeginning this summer in Michigan.
A hydraulic hybrid has no transmission, and unlike other hybrids does not rely upon a battery topower a motor. Instead, a diesel engine runs a pump, which converts pressure from hydraulic fluidinto power. Energy normally wasted by braking is also captured in pressurized tanks.
The truck burns 70% less fuel and emits 40% less carbon dioxide than other trucks, officialssaid. “If half of all the vehicles in Dallas-Fort Worth had this technology today, we would be veryclose to solving all our air problems,” EPA regional administrator Richard Greene said.
The truck may cost more upfront, perhaps 15%; but because it uses less fuel it could pay foritself in two to three years, said Charles Gray, EPA advanced technology director.
