An Post, the Irish national postal operator, has announced that its board has approved theappointment of Donal Connell as the new Chief Executive. He replaced Donal Curtin, who announced in

January that he would not renew his contract upon its expiry in July.

Donal Connell will join An Post from Maxtor Ireland Ltd where he held the position of GeneralManager. He is currently a director of Xilinx Europe and Chairman of the Institute of Technology,Blanchardstown. He previously held the position of Vice President of Worldwide Supply ChainOperations for 3Com Corporation.

Margaret McGinley, An Post chairperson, said: “Donal Connell brings a wealth of experience and astrong track record of achievement to the position of Chief Executive. An Post has made significantadvances in recent years and we are now well positioned to build on this progress, not least interms of our financial services strategy and Donal is eminently qualified to steer An Post throughthe next critical stage of its development,” she said.

Donal Curtin, who became CEO in 2003, steered the Irish post office through a majorrestructuring programme and turned around the company’s financial results from a €43 million lossin 2003 to profits for 2004 and 2005. One of the major decisions was the closure of the loss-makingSDS parcels division with the loss of 270 jobs.
