GLS opens new Berlin depot

GLS has opened a €5 million new depot in Bernau, close to Berlin, to increase its parcelhandling capacity for the German capital. Some 55 new jobs have been created.

The new sorting centre in Bernau-Schönow, replacing a smaller nearby facility, covers 3,700 sqmand has 10 trucking docking doors. The modern parcel sorting system and video surveillance ensuresmooth handling, GLS Germany said in a statement.

“The depot is designed to handle an average of 16,000 parcels per day,” said Swen Krüger,District Manager East of GLS Germany. “Up to 20,000 shipments a day can be handled at most.” Thefacility, however, can be extended since an extension plan has already been drawn up for potentialfuture needs.

A total of 115 depot staff and drivers will operate at and out of Bernau, 55 more employees thanat the previous depot. The new depot has direct access to the A11 motorway offering rapid roadconnections to northern Berlin districts and surrounding towns in the region.
