DHL unveiled today major price cuts and a product simplification for domestic parcel deliveriesin Germany. The move follows a significant loss of market share in Deutsche Post’s home market.
From July 1, the price for a 10kg parcel will be cut by over 50% to €6.90 from €10.50. A 20kgpackage will cost €9.90 instead of €14.00. The 5kg category, currently priced at €7.00 will bediscarded. DHL is also offering further savings of €1 per item for stamps bought online from its “Stampit” online franking service or from one of the 700 Packstations located in towns and citiesacross Germany.
The price for domestic small parcels (up to 2 kg) was already reduced by 10% to €3.90 from €4.30on May 4. International parcel and express prices are not affected by the price cuts.
“The lower package prices represent another major step toward our customers following the recentcut in the price for small parcels,” said Peter E. Kruse, Board Member DHL Express Germany andEurope. The roughly 12,000 postal retail outlets, 700 Packstations and 300 PostPoints areadditional evidence of DHL’s competitive edge in an increasingly fought-over market, he said. “Ourachievements in terms of touch points and the latest price cuts represent the biggest customerinitiative in the German market during the past few years.”
Claude R. Béglé, Chairman of the Divisional Board Express Germany and Managing Director ExpressCentral Europe, emphasized the advantages for the growing Internet retail trade: “Thesimplification of weight classes and the new prices make package consignments in times of boomingonline retail even more attractive for private customers.
