TNT plans major investment in German mail market

TNT

TNT is planning to invest a double-digit million euro sum per year in the German mail market towin market share from incumbent Deutsche Post and establish itself as the clear number two, CEO

Peter Bakker said. The German mail market is due to be fully liberalised from January 1, 2008,onwards.

The Dutch group is aiming for a 15% German mail market share “four or five years” after fullliberalisation, Bakker told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag in an interview. In all, Deutsche Postwould lose up to 40% of the German domestic market to competitors, he predicted.

“If we want to grow by up to 25% a year as planned, then we have to invest significantly. Itwill end up at several tens of millions of euros per year,” he commented. Bakker stressed, however, that TNT would focus on the business mail sector, and not compete with Deutsche Post in theconsumer market. The other key European mail markets for TNT are Italy and the UK, he added.
