GLS Netherlands opens new depot in Zwolle

GLS Netherlands has opened a new €4.3 million depot in the town of Zwolle to extend its networkin the north-east of the country. The parcels firm, which claims to be number two in the

Netherlands, had already opened new regional depots in Groningen, Wijchen, Utrecht and Den Bosch inthe last four years.

“With this new complex, we are strengthening our network in the north-east of the country. Wecan thus handle the rising number of consignments in this region,” said the company’s directorgeneral Aart Bon.

The new, 2,700 sqm centre is fitted with a modern, fully automatic parcel sorting system and hascapacity to handle up to 15,000 parcels a day. It has 48 loading doors and 11 docking stations forloading and unloading packages and freight shipments. Security is ensured via a video surveillancesystem. The depot has substantial space for expansion to a size of 4,000 sqm which would give itcapacity for up to 25,000 parcels a day.

GLS has also opened a parcel shop in the depot, allowing consumers in the area to drop off andcollect their parcels directly on-site. The company is currently developing a nationwide network ofparcel shops, and plans to open 200 of 800 planned locations this year.
