UPS wins US national environmental award

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has honoured UPS with its distinguished Clean AirExcellence Award in recognition of the express firm’s alternative fuel program and fuel

conservation initiatives. The annual award recognizes organizations that improve air qualitythrough innovative environmental programs.

UPS was honoured in the “Transportation Efficiency Innovations” category for expanding itsalternative fuel fleet program and for other fuel conservation efforts. UPS has been adaptingseveral new technologies for use in its large truck delivery fleet, including hybrid electric,hydrogen fuel cell and hybrid hydraulic vehicles, while deploying route planning software andtaking other steps in the air and on the ground to reduce emissions and save millions of gallons offuel annually.

“At UPS, we believe we can provide the best service to our customers while reducing our impacton the environment,” said Mike Herr, UPS vice president of environmental affairs. “We areconstantly evaluating new ways to maintain UPS as a sustainable enterprise.”

To date, UPS has invested over $15 million to deploy significant numbers of alternative-fuelvehicles in its fleet. UPS’s alternative fuel fleet drove more than 20 million miles last yearmaking deliveries to homes and businesses.

In addition to the EPA award, UPS recently received several other acknowledgements of itssustainability initiatives. For the fourth time, UPS was rated the most socially responsiblecompany in America in FORTUNE magazine’s 2006 Most Admired List. For the second year in a row, UPSwas included in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World ranking. “Our trackrecord continues to prove that ‘working green’ and ‘working smart’ are synonymous,” said Herr.
