DHL Germany outsources IT to T-Systems

DHL

DHL Germany is outsourcing the operation of its entire information and network technology toT-Systems. The express and logistics company will update and standardize its information

technology, leading to significant service cost reductions, T-Systems said in a statement.

T-Systems will assume responsibility for servicing around 8,000 workstations, about 500 serversas well as some 50 central applications at DHL. At two data centres, the Deutsche Telekomsubsidiary will bundle the customer’s server capacities that are dispersed among 50 differentlocations. The replacement of the existing computers with high-performance workstations will cutthe number of servers in half.

“The integrated service partnership with T-Systems will secure the business operation of our ITsystems and make it possible for us to plan our IT more strategically. This will enable DHL toconcentrate more closely on its core business, which is the provision of logistics services,”explains Dr. Dirk Olufs, CIO of DHL Express Germany. The new technologies will also enable improvedcustomer connections, thereby allowing the company to more flexibly meet short-term customerdemands.

In addition, T-Systems will operate all local and international networks as the information andnetwork technology provider. Around 300 national DHL locations will be integrated into a commondata network. The new corporate network runs on the basis of MPLS technology (multi-protocol labelswitching), which will enable DHL to prioritize important data over less time-critical information. This will ensure that elementary applications will run reliably even in times of full capacityutilization – a clear advantage for DHL’s customers because faster applications and optimizedinterfaces result in better service.

T-Systems is also consolidating local data networks and workstations at DHL subsidiaries. At thesubsidiaries, a heterogeneous mix of technologies from different vendors is being used. The serviceprovider will gradually standardize hardware at the individual subsidiaries and business units ofDHL and also reduce the technology to only a few types and models.
