Spanish CEP market set for 9.9% growth in 2005

The Spanish courier, express and parcels market is likely to grow 9.9 per cent to a value ofabout 6,285 million euros in 2005, according to a newly-published report by Spanish market research

firm DBK. Over the next two years, growth will moderate only slightly to about eight per cent in2006 and seven per cent in 2007, the report forecast.

DBK said the growth of the Spanish express and parcels market has accelerated over the lastthree years, driven by domestic demand based on stronger industrial production and the rise ininternet sales. Future prospects looked good due to these trends as well as the new demand createdby expansion of the European Union into Central and Eastern Europe, it noted.

In 2004, the Spanish CEP market grew 9.4 per cent in 2004 to 5,720 million euros, according tothe report. The standard parcels segment grew 10.6 per cent to 3,179 million euros last yearcompared to 8.1 per cent in 2003. The palletised shipments segment grew 7.9 per cent to 2,541million euros last year, following an increase of 9.5 per cent in 2003. The international expressand parcels volumes to and from Spain grew by 7.6 per cent last year.

The leading carriers in Spain are Seur, MRW and DHL in the parcels sector, while DHL, Azkar andIntegra2 occupy the top positions in the palletised shipments segment, according to the report.Overall, there are about 5,000 firms in the fragmented Spanish express, parcels and postal sectors.The market leaders are extending their domestic networks through franchise systems and cooperationagreements with other operators.
