DHL starts cargo flights from Malaysia’s Subang Airport

DHL has started scheduled freighter services to and from Subang Airport, the formerinternational airport of the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. The new domestic and international

services are being operated in cooperation with local air cargo carrier Transmile, with which ithas a long-term partnership. Flight details were not announced.

DHL Express Malaysia country manager Charles Brewer said in a statement that the resumption ofservices from Subang gave DHL a competitive advantage with better pick-up and drop-off times forcustomers, and he hoped to launch more services from Subang in the near future. DHL is the onlyexpress company operating out of Subang and is due to open a $1.3 million 2,200 sqm cargo facilitythere within the next few months.

Subang Airport was downgraded to a local airport when the large-scale new Kuala LumpurInternational Airport opened in 1998 but the local cargo community is keen to resume operationsfrom the airport, which is located conveniently for the Klang Valley business district.

Malaysia is an important market for DHL in south-east Asia. The express firm has investedheavily in a global IT centre and a warehouse facility in the country over the last two years. Thisyear it has expanded its ServicePoint retail outlet concept to the country to serve the large-scaleSME market. It has also broadened operations for the major cities to 24-hour, seven days per weekservices. DHL has about 30 locations in Malaysia, including operational gateways, service centres,offices and warehouses, and about 60 weekly flights.
